Irish-American Office, 116 Nassau Street New York, Decr. 5 1855 Jon Robt. Tyler Chairman of the Committee of the Friends of Ireland Astor House Dear Sir My partner, Mr. N. L. Cole, applied, yesterday afternoon, for admission to your meeting, not for the purpose of taking any part in the proceedings (for neither he nor I suppose that to be a delegate, under such circumstances is the legitimate duty of a journalist), but in order to ascertain the numerd present the State, represented, the names of the Delegates, and the nature of their credentials. It appears strange to me that the Con- vention came to such a conclusion against a proprietor of the "Irish-American", which, when others, on other Presses, were in the habit of drilling at and reviling the Irish Course, was the steady unflinching, and constant advo- cate of that cause for many years. When it had no other advocate [among] its class in this country. I can- not believe that you, Sir, were a party to this exclusion; it is not necessary for me to endorse your character by declaring that you are too much of a gentleman and a patriot and a lover of Ireland to act in such manner towards the Irish American, which has over 100,000 readers among the Irish population on this Continent, the British Provinces, and in Ireland, and a paid circulation of 25,000. This exclusion reminds me that the notice of the time and place of holding the Convention was intentionally witheld from the Irish American by the Secre- tary of the Boston Directory, al- though that Directory ordered, by resolution, that such notice should be sent both to the Citizen and Irish-American. I have no desire to make this a subject matter of pablic discussion, but I think it neces- sary for the benefit of the Cause to show how improper and injurious it is for any public officer to act in a narrow, selfish, personal, one-sided manner, either to gratify his own bad temper, or to advance the views of some favorite. I have the honor to be, Sir, your very obediant servant, [...] Lynch P.S. Perhaps Mr. Tyler will have the kindness to send this note for the Convention in meeting assembled.
