Providence March 13th 1856 My Dear Sir Yours of the 12th is now before me and I cordially agree with you in the ideas they mentioned of a meeting of the Directory. Mitchell has played the devil with us by warning the people against paying money & cautioning them against humbugs. I am not informed that he practiced self denial to the extent of refusing filthy lucre; perhaps the vile dross agrees better with his constitution while he played upon his harp of a thousand strings. In all my letters I have indignantly repudiated his ungentlemanly & vulgar insinuations & in a letter sent yesterday I could hold in no longer & poured out my vials of wrath upon his head. It was to McClenahan I think that the Sup. Directory should meet and demand an explanation from the conceited overbearing martyr. The earlier the day, the better; I think the best course would be to telegraph to the members as soon you appoint a day, which you might as on receipt of this. You might telegraph to the members yourself or else send me word what time would be agreeable to you and where. Wherever we meet it would be a good place to have a monster meeting (not of ourselves) with addresses etc to stir the slumbering fires & also to do [Iago's] bidding as to putting money in the purse, of the association as otherwise the members will most likely have to bear their own expenses for some time at least. The last clause of your letter has for three mortal hours defied my Champollion like scrutiny but at length I can exclaim Eureka and if I am not mistaken it reads "I will lecture as you propose sometime or other". This of course will modify somewhat the previous portion of this letter. Please state whether you mean to visit us as requested in a former letter or whether you mean a meeting near your home. Either way only keep the ball a rolling on for Buchanan-an-oo and Tyler too. Matters in Europe & here seem to take the course we would wish. War seems to me to be certain to continue in Europe & to commence here. I hope that this government is only delaying to put itself in fighting trim to try a bout for the Champions belt. Awaiting your reply I am Yrs Sincerely Jno. J. McGowan M. D. R. Tyler Esq. I wrote to Col. Conroy today before receiving yours; enclosed are some extracts from letters showing Mitchells behavior. A. In reference to the course of John Mitchell, thinks he ought to be denounced.
