New York June 22d 56 My Dear Sir I have recd. yours of the 20th mst. and shall carry out the recommendations and instructions therein contained to the letter. I take issue with you how- ever on the question of my being either a Hailstone or a Hotspur for owing to this demnition hot weather I have become an unctuous mass of greasiness whose pre- dominant characteristic is imperturbable good nature unless on particular occasions which I account for after the manner of Jack Talstaff "Thou seest I have more flesh than another man; and there- fore more frailty". I have seen McClenahan but once since I came to New York. I shall try to see him to morrow and ascertain when he goes to Phil. Fillmore arrived last night. The reception procession passed my house about 2 oclock this morning my children got up and looked out the window and one wanted to know if it was a funeral another, if they were going to hang that man. I am sorry he has allowed himself to be humbugged and betrayed by the dark lantern he is altogether too decent a man for their purpose. I am Yours Sincerely Jno. J. McGowan M.D. R. Tyler Esq.
