My dear Govr
     I have no very 
great confidence in your 
idea of appealing to ''The'' 
''[Masses]''.  Give me the control 
of ''certain'' men & newspapers i
n a District or a State & 
I can always control the 
''[masses]''.  A statesman 
aspiring to the Presidency 
should, of course, keep himself 
all the time in a position 
of availability & should 
endeavour to [infuse] his 
[personality] [unto] the 
[masses] to as great an 
extent as possible, but 
in this Country the [evil] 
is too vast, the [interests]

too various & [complicated], for
any one man ^whose history is [confined] to [walk] of in ''Civil''
''Life'', to [venture] to reach
the masses by []
special [secondary] [influence]
to the [point].
     My brother in Law
James Cooper of Georgia
tells me that with Gardin[er's]
[] of the "[] [] [],,
& Govr MacDonald for [you]
[the] Georgia Democracy
can be brought to [sustain]
you in preference to Cobb
to [Douglass].  He says that
Gardiner can do as much
to [make] & [consolidate] opinion
in [] of a given man
of this [time] as any other
man in Georgia:  They 
are against Cobb.  Gardiner 
is an old friend of my wife['s]
Family & I shall get Coop[er]

(who is himself a [pretty]
strong man) to talk with
him.  Govr MacDonald
has written to me a 
long letter & is [coming] [to]
[] to see me.  If so I
shall have an opportunity
to discover the exact [character]
of things in Georgia.
     In this State we
have one clique for
Douglass, & another which
is anxious to [try] [Breckinridge].
Recently I have had an 
important conversation
with Judge Ellis Lewis.
He has [declined] the Supreme
Court Bench & returns to
private life.  He is a man
of large fortune, of great
[ambition], of [very] []
[political] [connections], profound
& skillful, & [wishes] [some]

day to be made a federal 
Supreme Judge.  Altho Black
(attorney Genrl) deliverd the opinion 
in the "Passmore Williamson,, case 
Lewis did the work. He enjoys 
the [intimate] [friendship] of [Parker] 
the govr that is to be 
& he is willing to [engage] 
in [politics] [on] your behalf. 
He wishes to [show] you 
[]. [As] it is Parker 
is drifting towards Douglass 
I fear. Should Mr [Breckinridge] 
prove your active friend
we can [whip] all opposition
, but will he be active for 
any one;
I have been [doing] all 
in my power of late to [conciliate]
the [Forneyites] & [officeholders] without 
yielding any point. They
[are] [hardly] to be trusted tho: 
Cant you visit Phila 
after a while. I am sure it 
would be of [].
