Abstract: Secretary of State [James Madison] informed him of Jefferson's offer of the marshall's place to him; has got two young men to undertake the riding and will accept appointment; will have to go to Williamsburg to qualify; hopes law making new arrangements in judiciary will be repealed; business in this district does not justify the expense.
