Description: Herman Melville's Civil War volume Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War occupies a unique place in American Civil War literature. Leah Fry's thesis explores the poetic methods of Melville's work as it relates to conventions of the time, and ultimately argues that Melville promotes a new form of patriotism within his volume.
