The Colonial Echo, the student yearbook of William & Mary, began publication in 1899 and has been published since then except for 1900 and 1904 when no volumes were produced. In addition to photographs of students, the yearbook includes information about student groups and activities, campus events, student interpretations of the larger society, scenes of campus and the surrounding area, as well as information about university administrators and faculty in its early years.

William & Mary is aware that the Colonial Echo contains offensive content.
The Special Collections Research Center’s mission is to record, preserve and provide access to historical materials and artifacts relating to the university’s history. We strive for transparency and access in making our collections available. Therefore, neither Special Collections nor the university will withhold the yearbooks. The Colonial Echo will continue to be accessible to the public in digitized and physical formats.

In early 2019, at the request of W&M President Katherine A. Rowe, William & Mary Libraries launched a comprehensive audit of the 120 years the Colonial Echo student yearbook had been published. Special Collections staff reviewed the yearbooks for content dealing with racial and ethnic stereotypes. The audit, which was completed in December 2019, required roughly 176 hours of work reviewing more than a century of yearbooks. Staff members flagged more than 175 images, references and text passages.

Audit and contact information are included on William & Mary’s Reconciliation website, which catalogs the university’s ongoing and cross-campus efforts to confront its history with race and racism.
